What's the deal with Wheat Belly?

You have probably heard all about eating a wheat free diet- cut out wheat and it will be the miracle cure for everything- lose that extra 10 pounds, get your energy back, cure your aches and pains, improve your digestion and end that constipation forever.   As with any “diet” or new innovative health product, as a consumer you should have questions and want to know the facts about why claims are being made and why so many people are jumping on the bandwagon.

Blood Sugar and Fat

Blood sugar goes up when you eat wheat.  As blood sugar increases, insulin immediately increases, which not only triggers the uptake of glucose by cells but also the accumulation of visceral fat.  As this accumulation of fat increases, cells become resistant to insulin and do not respond as well to the signal to uptake glucose from the bloodstream.  And as less glucose is absorbed into cells, the pancreas produces more and more insulin, in an attempt to signal cells to take up the glucose. The more insulin the more fat is stored, and the more weight is gained.  And so the cycle begins.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to understanding the impact that modern day wheat has on health.
