We are always on the look out for healthy and tasty snacks that our clients can eat when they are on the go, don't have time to sit and eat a meal, or just want something sweet to finish off a meal. And actually, we are always looking for products like this for ourselves to eat too- because we don't always have time to make everything from scratch.
We recently tried Hippie Snack's Hippie Cookies. And, we were delightfully surprised, especially because we don't consider ourselves to be hippies! These cookies are completely raw, so they are still packed full of vitamins and active enzymes that can otherwise get destroyed when food is cooked at a high temperature. The other great thing about Hippie Cookies, is that they are gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free, making them a great option for those of us with food sensitivities.
Do you want to know what they are made with instead of the nasty ingredients normally found in packaged cookies? They are made with cashews, coconut oil, organic vanilla, agave and Himalayan crystal salt.
The three different varieties or Hippie Cookies are then distinguished by a few different special ingredients.
Chocolate Cashew- has organic cacao powder
Vanilla Almond- has almonds added in
Lemon Coconut- has lemon and shredded coconut
Why these ingredients?
Coconut oil is one of our favorite oils to use in baked goods. Coconut oil is a medium-chain fatty acid, which makes it really easy for the body to breakdown and digest. Coconut oil is also known for its healing properties and even has some antimicrobial components.
Cashews and almonds are a great alternative to use in baked goods instead of flour. Not only do they serve as a gluten free replacement for flour, but they provide protein. Eating protein rich desserts is the best way to keep blood sugar stabilized and avoid the spikes and crashes in energy that usually happen when we eat too many sweets.
Agave syrup is a little bit controversial in our opinion. It does have a high level of fructose, which puts stress on the liver to process it out of the body. However, the benefit is that this does not spike blood sugar (as glucose does). This makes agave a safe sweetener for diabetics. And, if you are eating desserts made with agave syrup once in a while, it's fine to eat in moderation.
Himalayan crystal salt provides a great array of minerals and trace minerals. We always use a high quality sea salt in our cooking and baking, and himalayan crystal salt is one of the best options instead of regular old table salt (which is processed, has chlorine, and does not provide all of the minerals).
Our favorite variety of the Hippie Snack's Hippie Cookies is officially the Chocolate Cashew...because we always love chocolate.
